I wonder if those teachers I had were conspiring in this vein when they allowed us to advance any number of actually rather silly historical hypotheses as long as we could cite supporting material and sources.

Wonderful advice here. I have had mixed luck with secondary students and getting them to read. I have been surprised that my students have often never seen primary sources and have never been taught to question them. I have had some success using school newsletters or other emails as examples and asking them to think of them like sources or even having students produce their own source (i.e. write a journal entry about the first day of school and then compare entries).

Some schools do not have proper libraries. It's a harder challenge now, I think. My high school history teacher used to give us packets which included chapters from different books. we did read. It was interesting.
